Times They Are A-Changing

I've been off this week waiting for my next training to begin on my journey to Afghanistan.  What a great week it's been allowing me to rest, get some sun, catch up on reading, and really prepare myself for the next year.  I finally had some time to just nerd-out and crack open my favorite literary escape...the comic book.  Catching up on Superman (yes, I'm a DC guy) I learned about the upcoming DC Comics Reboot.  At the end of August, DC Comics will wipe the slate clean and start over all of their story lines with only 52 titles all re-numbering at #1.  Call me a curmudgeon, but changing what isn't broke always sticks in my craw.  I have every Superman comic since 1991.  I've followed Superman's death, return, marriage, and development as a character since I was a little boy.  To start over at #1 and try to make him a new hero for a new generation doesn't really appeal to me.  As a faithful follower I will still have Queen City Bookstore in Buffalo, NY hold my subscription that I pick up once or twice a year when I'm home until I find that Superman no longer embodies America.  If that day ever comes, I will sadly put away my last hobby and call it a day.  The good news about the reboot is for people that always wanted to start reading comic books but worried that they had missed years of story lines and it would be difficult to catch up.  Not a problem now!  If you want to start following Batman you can pick up #1 next month.  And if you are more into the storyline than the collecting, all your favorite titles are available in digital form the day of release cheaper than print.
In completely unrelated news, when not reading comics I spend my evenings outside as a Polish Buffet for all the mosquitoes.  No matter where I go or who I'm with, the bloodsuckers come to me first.  Last night I tried out the Off! Clip-On device.  What this unit does is takes a highly toxic chemical (the box warns you must immediately wash your hands after using it) and you strap it to your body.  A battery powered fan blows the cancer-causing chemical all around you giving many users migraines.  Seeing the benefits to such technology I strapped it on and went outside for about half an hour.  Believe it or not, not one bite.  After my severe headache subsided I got to thinking how awesome this thing is as long as you are standing still and there isn't a breeze.  What a long way we have come from lathering the cancer-causing pesticides directly on to our skin instead of just releasing it in a gas cloud around us.

I need to get some of that headache gas... although if I have more kids they might have 3 heads... maybe I should stick with the off!
